Indigo Yoga is
a Baptiste Power Vinyasa yoga studio. All of our teachers are
either Baptiste certified or in the process of Teacher Training
and are scheduled to be certified within the year. However,
Indigo Yoga deeply respects ALL yoga traditions and strives to
honor the roots and wisdom of each of these ancient practices
while at the same time building a meaningful framework for
bringing the benefits of the practice into modern living.
Indigo Yoga is dedicated to all the master teachers, past and
present, who have kept the essential light of yoga alive for
thousands of years. Though approaches vary, ultimately each yoga
tradition shares the same aim - integrating the quiet truth of
who and what we really are with our actions, thoughts and speech
- to create inner peace, health and wholeness.
Even though Indigo is a Baptiste studio, we would like to share
some information about other traditions and methods that we have
all studied.

Ashtanga |
|
Ashtanga
is an ancient system of Yoga that was taught by Vamana Rishi in
the Yoga Korunta. This text was imparted to Sri T.
Krishnamacharya in the early 1900's by his Guru Rama Mohan
Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during
the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in
1927.
Ashtanga is broken into various stages of practice in which
students progressively learn various series of postures. The
first series is a challenging and dynamic sequence called the
Primary Series that consists of 72 postures. Ashtanga teaches a
specific breathing technique called Ujjayi which is used to
create the internal heat that purifies the nervous system.
Another important component of this system is mula and uddiyana
bandha. These are the locks which seal in energy thereby giving
lightness, strength and health to the body. Dristhi is the place
where you look while in the asana. Dristhi stabilizes the
functioning of the mind. The Ashtanga method employs these
specific components that help the dedicated practitioner purify
and unite the mind and body.
Developed by Pattabhi Jois of
Mysore, India, Ashtanga is a popular and energetic method of yoga. Practiced in
a moderately heated room (up to 95 degrees), Ashtanga can be modified from its
Traditional 2-3 hour Primary Series lesson to “short forms” which can range from
30 minutes to 90 minutes.
The emphasis is on practicing stationary postures and movement coordinated with
the breath (vinyasa). Specific visual or mental focus (drishti) and the use of
energetic locks (bandhas) are used to build internal heat, awaken core energies
and move toward a natural state of meditation. Including the sun salutations and
standing poses, the full practice involves a minimum of 70 poses. All levels are
welcome. It is a constantly evolving practice to work into gradually.
Modifications and preparatory phases for all the poses are always suggested.

SlowFlow/Restorative |
|
An
excellent lesson for the beginning, older, injured/recovering, pregnant,
postnatal or resting student. Also great for young adults. After
gently moving through modified Sun Salutations, the students heal and
rejuvenate with 30- 45 minutes of restorative posturing. Supported and
propped poses are facilitated by the instructor to promote healing of
muscles, joints, tissues and allow for a deepened state of
relaxation.

Vinyasa |
|
In Vinyasa yoga postures are linked together by the breath,
creating a fluid movement which is both energizing and powerful.
Vinyasa is a fun, invigorating form of yoga where the body and
mind playfully explore yoga postures that are carefully
sequenced. Often times music is played during class.
In Vinyasa yoga, for each movement there is one breath. For
example, in the traditional Vinyasa based Surya Namskar there is
inhaling while raising one's arms overhead, then exhaling while
bending forward, placing the hands next to the feet, etc.
Linking graceful movement with fluid breath causes the mind and
body to become purified and united as one.
Combining the breath with movement in such a manner also creates
internal heat. Heating the system both removes toxins and builds
flexibility. The combination of the asanas with movement and
breath make the blood circulate freely around all the joints,
taking away body pains. Over time tension within the nervous
system also disappears. Practicing this method of yoga clears
the mind and makes the body become healthy and strong.
Easily the most popular method of
practice here and worldwide, Vinyasa epitomizes a healing blend of all yoga
styles. It is universal; you can use these concepts with any style of practice
and it caters to all levels, from beginner to advanced students.
In order to derive the maximum energy from your yoga practice, you need to
connect the yoga postures together; this is called a vinyasa. Outwardly, the
vinyasa creates a beautiful flow of continuous energy.
No two lessons are ever identical, but are generally Ashtanga-based. Vinyasa
builds upon itself, creating active combinations of postures that are
continuously flowing. Practiced in a heated room (up to 95 degrees), this method
detoxifies and cleanses the body, mind and spirit.
These
movement-based classes offer creative and unique sequences of poses that
flow together. Our vinyasa classes are richly infused with
classical yoga teachings, pranayama and meditation to tame the mind and
open the heart. |

Priya |
|
Priya means freedom. The Priya
method teaches the breath, the grounding and structure, to allow the body to
flow freely with the breath in each asana. It allows practitioners to experience
freedom in their own bodies through acceptance of where each student is in every
moment. There is no right or wrong.
Priya Yoga draws on the teaching of Vanda Scaravelli. One of the wonderful gifts
of Scaravelli's work is its simplicity. The three basic principles – the breath,
gravity, and wave – remain the same throughout practice, no matter what your
level. Once you clearly understand these principles, myriad details of alignment
and correct action fall into place easily. Vanda’s approach to yoga was
formulated on the premise that "you become intelligent and at the same time you
are happy.”

Private
Lessons & Semi-Private Lessons |
|
Private
Lessons can be scheduled any time. Providing complete one-on-one
attention and instruction, these sessions are a great way to improve
your practice and address areas of concern. Although Indigo provides a
semi-private atmosphere for learning, a private lesson can dramatically
change your practice as the teacher can give instruction and assistance
to every pose. The private lesson is also good for individuals who
simply feel more comfortable being taught in a private setting, as well
as others who desire special attention due to a specific condition or
injury. |
